Setting Up Utilities in Gainseville

Setting Up Utilities

Moving to a new apartment for the first time involves many new responsibilities. The majority of college students have never needed to worry about paying for utilities. Once you are able to understand how the system works and how to set it up, the process seems much more manageable. The most important factor to consider is that college students all move in and out of Gainesville student apartments around the same time. Therefore, you need to set up your account as quickly as possible. Otherwise, you may have to wait longer for your basic necessities.

Gainesville Regional Utilities

Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) provides utilities for apartments for rent in Gainesville, FL. This service covers electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater; both garbage collection and stormwater provided by Gainesville.

These services can become pretty expensive. If you are setting up a new account with GRU and you do not have a letter that proves you have had a positive experience with another utility provider for 24 months, you will need to put down a security deposit. A deposit will be necessary for each of the four types of services. However, if you sign up for the automatic payment service or have a letter from your previous provider you will not be required to pay a deposit. After a period of time, this deposit will be applied to your bill. If you cancel your account early, you will receive your down payment back after your final bill is paid. You will also be required to pay for activation charges depending on the services you will need.

In order to set up an account, you will need to provide the address of your future student housing near UF, social security number, the date you want your services to begin and your bank account number (if you choose automatic payment). You have the option to apply online, in person or by phone.

Cox Communications

Cox Communications provides phone, internet and cable. Before signing up for any of these programs, you will first want to check with your new UF housing to ensure none of them are already provided. Buying a cohesive package is advantageous because purchasing them together often provides a discount. You can sign up for these services online or in the store. Traditionally, it takes about two days for orders to be processed so it is beneficial to sign up for them ahead of time. Cox will check your credit and charge you accordingly.

You have the option to pay Cox to set up your modem and system for your UF apartments or you can choose to do it yourself. If you attempt to do it alone and make a mistake, Cox will charge you to fix it. Therefore, unless you are confident in your abilities, you may just want to hire Cox.
